Dr. Tish Oney, Artistic Director of The Peggy Lee Project, spearheaded this tour with three critically-acclaimed performances at The Pasadena Jazz Institute in May 2007, thereby completing her doctoral work in the field of Jazz Studies at The University of Southern California's renowned Thornton School of Music. This project, resulting from Oney's dissertation research, combines performance of original songs by Peggy Lee with thoughtful consideration of Lee's lyric-writing style to show the unparalleled (and relatively under-appreciated) contributions made by this prolific and legendary vocalist/songwriter. Audiences will enjoy Dr. Oney's arrangements of recognizable songs by Lee which became jazz standards, and will also appreciate the rich repertoire of unknown songs. This spectacular concert experience headlines at large performing arts centers, cabaret theaters, universities, jazz festivals and concert series nationwide in cooperation with The Peggy Lee Foundation to inform, entertain and educate the American public about many of the essentially unknown songs penned by this iconic entertainer. Dr. Oney explores Lee's vocal style, showing how it both reflected and informed her songwriting. Writing over 270 songs and collaborating with many legendary composers, Peggy Lee represented a major force in pop and jazz music of the twentieth century, yet the public remains largely unaware of her phenomenal and creative contributions to the Great American Songbook. Oney joins with composer and Peggy Lee's former music director, John Chiodini (on guitar), leading a quartet of Los Angeles' best to provide audiences with a rare concert experience they will never forget. In addition to an unforgettable evening concert performance, The Peggy Lee Project Residency Program offers shortened daytime educational concerts with the full band, as well as lectures and masterclasses by Dr. Oney. These lectures may be tailored to meet the needs of your specific age group, classroom subject and class duration. Universities, colleges and other venues may wish to consider programming The Peggy Lee Project during Women's History Month (March) or Jazz Appreciation Month (April).
